The ds4 doesn't come apart that easily but it was a really straight forward process. Meant I had to go the eBay route and just bought a pack of sticks for a couple quid and do it myself. I also had a red ds4 with the same issue that could not be changed by Sony (they only dealt with black ones at that time). My 2 launch controllers both had to go back to Sony for replacement, they lasted less then a year before the splitting was severe. The dock itself has excellent build quality, really weighty which helps it stay put and running out of power is never an issue for more then a second to swap over.

The official charging dock was the first dock I have ever bought and it has absolutely converted me, I now have 2 (2 controllers synced with ps4 on one dock, 2 on the other for PS3 and Mac) as well as a dock for my vita and 3ds (both of which are of much cheaper and lighter construction but still really handy). It's 25 quid but the build quality is rock solid and the best accessory i've ever bought. No more usb cables, and you get a nice lightshow while they charge. They charge really, really fast and you can quickly swap one with the other as it connects from the bottom, unlike the cheapo 3rd party ones where it connects via the fiddly micro usb at the top.
